Let’s Defy the Stereotypes of Aging

Welcome to another edition of my Newsletter for Women Over 50 who want to age with passion and purpose.

I love reading and hearing about women who are continuing to remain active and purposeful as they age.

I recently saw an article about an 86-year-old woman who has been a flight attendant for 65 years, since 1957, and is still flying with American Airlines today. That’s inspiring! I would love to be on one of her flights!

I was having lunch with a friend a few days ago and there was a table of women nearby celebrating the 88th Birthday of one of their groups. This woman looked healthy and happy to be surrounded by friends on her special day.  All the women at that table looked interesting and vibrant as they showered their friends with gifts and best wishes.

There are many other examples of women continuing to flourish as they age and defying the stereotypes that women are in decline and are no longer interesting or have anything worthwhile to contribute.

The stories about women who are pushing the boundaries of what has been considered the age of decline and infirmity are what give us hope that our culture is changing and that we all can continue to be relevant and active as we go through the aging process.

However, ageism still exists in many forms in our society and the stigma of aging has not gone away completely, especially for women.

That is why it is so important for all of us to defy these stereotypes by showing the world that we are still able to be relevant and contributing members of society!
